The Vogt lab is interested in the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying GABAergic interneuron development and maturation, a diverse group of neurons that primarily inhibit brain activity. One focus is investigating how dysfunction of GABAergic interneurons may underlie some phenotypes associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To this end, we study the function of candidate genes implicated in ASD and GABAergic interneuron development, and the impact that human mutations have on gene function. We use a combination of genetic mouse models, molecular cloning, cell culture and transplantation, biochemistry and imaging techniques to answer these questions.
