Fellow, Hegarty Fellow
Dr. Rebecca Kammes is an MSU-DOCTRID Hegarty Fellow in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education working with Dr. Marisa Fisher. Dr. Kammes received her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies at MSU, her M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy at Adler University, and her B.A. in Psychology at Northern Illinois University. She has 6 years of experience working as a couple and family therapist for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Dr. Kammes’ research is informed by her experiences as a clinician and focuses on the risks and challenges of developing a positive sexual identity for older adolescents and adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities. This includes understanding healthy intimate relationship experiences as well as providing sexuality education for adults with disabilities and their families. Her work is based in the principles of community-based participatory research, with an emphasis on program evaluation and using a strengths-based, healthy relationship and sexuality expression framework.
