Bio

Dr. Christiana Okyere is an MSU-DOCTRID Hegarty Fellow in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education working with Drs. Connie Sung and Gloria Lee at Michigan State University and the Daughters of Charity Disability Support Services in Ireland. Christiana completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She has 8 years of experience working with non-governmental organizations on social development projects that advance equal educational rights and quality of life for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families.

Dr Okyere focuses on understanding barriers to educational inclusion for children and youth with IDD and explores how to promote educational, employment outcomes and quality of life for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families globally. She achieves this by studying inclusive and equitable quality education for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities to navigate systems of support for them. Her goal is to contribute to the educational advancement, employment outcomes and over all well-being of persons with IDD and their families through research and global development projects. In her time as a Hegarty Fellow, Christiana looks forward to collaborations with faculty and community partners on research and global development projects that advance the quality of life of persons with IDD across the globe.
